Crate Training your Pup

The crate is a valuable tool to use in training a new pup that comes into the home, if used correctly. There are some owners who have never used the method of crate training on any of their dogs, so they tend to use the crate method of training incorrectly. A crate should never be used for punishment because the pup will come to fear it and will not go inside. Crate your pup during the period you are training him so he will not misbehave and destroy the house. After that time, it should be a place he goes voluntarily, because he has come to see it as his own den where he will have peace, solitude, and comfort. Begin the training by dropping some small treats near the crate then drop them closer to the crate until you place them inside. Don’t force the pup to go in if he does not want to enter. Do the same with his food until he will enter the crate and eat. Close the door while he is eating and open it as soon as he finishes. Start leaving the door closed for longer periods after he has finished eating. If your dog whines to get out of the crate, ignore him, and wait until he stops before letting him out. You don’t want to give him the message that his whines will achieve his desired results. The crate is an easy and safe way to transport your dog, and once he is used to it, you won’t have any problem getting him into it to take him places, or him voluntarily going into it to relax and even to sleep in.
