Iams canned cat food is recalled
WASHINGTON, June 10 (UPI) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced the voluntary recall of Iams-brand canned cat food because of a health issue.
The FDA said The Procter & Gamble Co. of Cincinnati initiated the recall because specific lots of the cat food distributed in North America might contain insufficient levels of thiamine (Vitamin B1). Cats that are fed the recalled product as their only food are at risk of developing thiamine deficiency.
Being recalled are all varieties of "Iams ProActive Health" canned cat and kitten food with code dates of "09/2011" to "06/2012." The code dates are printed on the bottom of the cans.
P&G officials said the recall is limited to only Iams canned cat food distributed in North America. No other Iams pet food is involved.
The FDA said early signs of thiamine deficiency might include loss of appetite, salivation, vomiting and weight loss. In advanced cases, signs may include ventroflexion (downward curving) of the neck, wobbly gait, falling, circling and seizures. If treated promptly, thiamine deficiency is typically reversible, officials said.
Consumers who have purchased the recalled canned cat food are advised to discard it or they can contact the company for more information at 877-340-8826.
